Discovering the Factors Influencing Students’ Perception of the Educational Environment in the Context of Foreign Language Training in a Technical Higher School

Yulia Stukalina
University of Latvia, Latvia

Summary

Introduction. One of the most challenging tasks for educators is to encourage students of a nonlinguistic institute to study languages. Traditionally, such institutions focus more on promoting the learning of special subjects. However, in the knowledge-based economy, multidisciplinary skills are of fundamental importance. To encourage language learning education managers provide the learning process participants with motivating educational environment.

The Aim of the Study. To report the findings of the pilot study, which explores how students perceive different aspects of the educational environment in the context of language teaching and learning in a technical higher school. Additionally, practical implications of MIT for FLT are discussed and illustrated by a few examples of the activities designed in the framework of the theory.

The Aim of the Study. To establish a new perspective on both effective and creative foreign language teaching (FLT) in the framework of Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences (MIT). Lasīt vairāk "Towards Creative Foreign Language Teaching: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences in Use"

Quality Analysis of the Written Russian Language of Students of Latvia

Margarita Gavrilina
University of Latvia, Riga, Latvia

Abstract

A decrease in the quality of the written language of students is one of the most topical and therefore one of the most heatedly discussed problems among teachers and students’ parents; it is one of the problems discussed in linguadidactics. In the following article issues regarding young students’ linguistic behaviour in their native (Russian) language have been analysed. The material presented in the article is based on the results of a scientific research conducted in schools  throughout Latvia in 2008.

The aim of the study is to identify to what extent the development of the linguistic personality of young students in their native (Russian) language is successful. To this end, primary school teachers analysed the situation regarding the development of the written linguistic behaviour of students of Grade 4. The issues were identified, typical linguistic mistakes were noted and characterised, and reasons for making them were found out. Effects of Text Messaging on Academic Performance

Amanda Barks, H. Russell Searight, Susan Ratwik
Lake Superior State University, USA

Abstract

University students frequently send and receive cellular phone text messages during classroom instruction. Cognitive psychology research indicates that multi-tasking is frequently associated with performance cost. However, university students often have considerable experience with electronic multi-tasking and may believe that they can devote necessary attention to a classroom lecture while sending and receiving text messages. In the current study, university students who used text messaging were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: 1. a group that sent and received text messages during a lecture or, 2. a group that did not engage in text messaging during the lecture. Participants who engaged in text messaging demonstrated significantly poorer performance on a test covering lecture content compared with the group that did not send and receive text messages. Participants exhibiting higher levels of text messaging skill had significantly lower test scores than participants who were less proficient at text messaging. It is hypothesized that in terms of retention of lecture material, more frequent task shifting by  hose with greater text messaging proficiency contributed to poorer performance. Overall, the findings do not support the view, held by many university students, that this form of multitasking has little effect on the acquisition of lecture content. Results provide empirical support for teachers and professors who ban text messaging in the classroom. Lasīt vairāk "Effects of Text Messaging on Academic Performance"

Rapid inhabitant mobility and migration to European and other countries in the world as well as in the territory of Latvia goes on since Latvia has become the member of the European Union. There are several possible reasons for that: economic crisis in the country, low salaries in the social state sector, individual strivings and aspirations of every person to achieve self-realization. Many children become parentless as parents go to different countries. A part of Latvia’s inhabitants come back but a part of them continue to live abroad.
